Black Rose shrimp (Neocaridina davidi var. black rose, also sold as Chocolate) are a deep chocolate-brown to near-black Neocaridina with a rich, glossy shell. They are one of the most dramatic colours in the hobby and look stunning against bright green plants and moss. All our Black Rose are bred in Ayr, South Ayrshire by Ayr Aquatics.
This listing is for a pack of 10 Black Rose shrimp, our most popular size. Ten shrimp is the sweet spot for starting a breeding colony. It almost always includes a healthy mix of males and females, and it gives you enough shrimp to see them out and about grazing in a 20–40 litre planted tank. Once they settle, most keepers see berried (egg-carrying) females within a few weeks.
Black Rose is bred for a dark, solid body colour that runs from deep chocolate to almost black. The darkest shrimp are usually females. Males may look a touch lighter and browner. Lighting and substrate make a big difference: on dark gravel or aquasoil the colour looks deeper and richer.
Black Rose shrimp give you a bold, moody look that contrasts beautifully with green plants. They are perfect for aquascapes and nano tanks, and they are just as hardy and easy to breed as Red Cherry shrimp, so you get a showpiece colour with beginner-friendly care.
Keeping the line pure: Keep Black Rose with other Black Rose or Chocolate Neocaridina only. If you cross them with red, blue, yellow or orange Neocaridina the young will lose the dark colour and turn patchy or wild-type.
Add them to a fully cycled tank only, with zero ammonia and nitrite. Shrimp are sensitive to copper, so check any plant fertilisers or medications before using them. Use dechlorinated tap water and do small, regular water changes of 10–20% a week rather than large ones. Moss, plants, cholla wood and Indian almond leaves give them biofilm to graze on and hiding places when moulting. Feed a quality shrimp food every day or two, in amounts they finish within a couple of hours, plus the occasional blanched vegetable.
Float the bag for 20–30 minutes to match temperature, then drip-acclimatise slowly over 1–2 hours before netting the shrimp into the tank. Do not pour the bag water into your aquarium. Keep the lights low for the first day and do not worry if they hide at first. That is normal.
Are Black Rose shrimp hard to keep?
No. They are Neocaridina davidi and need the same care as Red Cherry shrimp.
Will Black Rose shrimp breed in my tank?
Yes, in a cycled, stable tank with hiding places. Females carry their eggs under the tail for about three to four weeks.
Do Black Rose shrimp eat plants?
No. They pick biofilm and algae off plants but do not damage healthy plants.
